Islamabad Peshawar Motorway Reopens After Days of Closure

The M-1 motorway between Islamabad and Peshawar reopened to traffic in both directions on Monday, September 28, according to the National Highways and Motorway Police. The N-5 GT Road between the two cities has also reopened, easing travel after several routes were closed ahead of a planned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) march.

The M-1, parts of the M-14 motorway and sections of the GT Road were shut last week as authorities prepared for the protest. PTI had initially planned to march towards Islamabad on September 27 but later moved the start date to October 4. The party says it is pressing for the release of its founder, former prime minister Imran Khan.

Motorway police said some routes still required restoration work. Sections of the M-14 had reopened, but work continued between Kot Belian and Isa Khel and on a link connecting the M-1 with the Hazara Motorway. Authorities advised drivers heading towards Abbottabad to use an alternative route through Burhan and Hasan Abdal where necessary.

Monday’s reopening brings immediate relief for commuters and transport operators travelling between Islamabad and Peshawar. It does not mean every affected road is fully restored. Travellers using the M-14 or the Hazara connection should check the latest motorway police advisory before leaving, as repairs and traffic arrangements may change.
