NEW YORK, September 25: Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman used his first address to the United Nations General Assembly to set out what he called a “3-R” strategy: recovery, restoration and reconstruction. He presented it as the framework for his government’s plans to strengthen the economy and public institutions.
Speaking in New York on Thursday, Rahman said his government wants to expand employment, develop manufacturing and support young entrepreneurs. He also described plans focused on women’s education and economic participation, social protection, healthcare and practical skills.
The prime minister addressed issues beyond Bangladesh’s borders, including war, rising energy costs and the Rohingya refugee crisis. He called for international support for the safe return of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar and for continued humanitarian assistance in the meantime. He also urged stronger action on climate finance and access to technology for developing countries.
The speech laid out the government’s priorities, but their impact will depend on how its programmes are funded and carried out. Rahman’s appearance put those domestic goals before a global audience while renewing Bangladesh’s requests for international cooperation on refugees, climate and development.
